THE VENUE
Leith on the Fringe (LOTF) @ Out of the Blue Drill Hall (OOTB) on Dalmeny Street, is an exciting new Edinburgh Festival Fringe venue in the heart of Leith, one of Edinburgh’s most diverse and vibrant districts. It is an extension of the Edinburgh Festivals network with its own hub – a venue with two performance spaces (a 190 seat main theatre and a 90 seat studio), a cafe and bar and a box office.
Inspired by the work of the many artistic companies that call Leith home this dynamic family friendly venue presents a mixed programme of UK and international shows.
Though the full programme for LOTF at the 2011 Edinburgh Festival Fringe includes performances from a diverse range of artistic disciplines, the long term aim of the venue is to be best known as Edinburgh’s main hub for showcasing circus, aerial and street art of the highest quality; as well as the more diverse arts, physical theatre and dance disciplines. Organisers envisage LOTF becoming the main (affordable) platform for talented artists from the UK and all over the World working across these disciplines to present work, run workshops and network during the Fringe and throughout the year.
Coincidentally a report by The Audience Business which evaluated the impact of marketing to audiences of the 2010 Fringe suggests a need for venues to specialise in a genre, or to be more specific about the type of shows they programme. As the festival grows and as the brochure grows with it, it has become harder for an audience to find the shows of most interest to them. A venue that specialises in 1 or 2 genres stands a better chance of attracting the right audience to its shows.
The LOTF team want to increase footfall to Leith during the Fringe, and throughout the year, promoting it as a place ‘where great things happen’, a destination in the heart of Edinburgh.
As a result the venue has been programmed, for the 2011 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, in such a way as to dictate a morning, afternoon or evening well spent; encouraging audiences to make the short trip to Leith, arriving early or staying on in order to take advantage of the available workshop and performance packages, together with the drinks and food promotions on offer at local bars and restaurants.
It is the ambition of LOTF to become an umbrella organisation that supports and promotes Leith as an affordable and exciting alternative destination during the Fringe and throughout the year. It also plans to develop other venues in Leith into performance spaces; organise performances, workshops and master classes at the venue all year round and build an annual multi-faceted programme of cultural events throughout Leith.
Out of the Blue – Drill Hall Café and Bar
Cafe and licensed bar open Mon - Sun 10:00-22:30
The cafe strives to use fresh, organic, free-range, fair trade and local ingredients wherever possible, and to support neighbouring businesses with a similar ethos. They believe food that is in-season and has enjoyed an uncompromised journey to your plate simply tastes better.
All of their hot main dishes are prepared on the premises using fresh ingredients. Cakes and bakes are oven-fresh: kneaded into life and whisked together by the inspired team. Whilst the majority of their meals are vegetarian, the meat options that they do offer are procured from renowned butcher Malone’s. Their fish and eggs are also sourced from local merchants and bread comes from Manna House.
A hub for both the out of the blue Drill Hall resident artists and the curious Leith community, they extend their support and respect by offering great food and drink at fair prices.
The Café is licensed and offers a carefully selected range of beers, wines and spirits.
